The Fictional Character I’d Most Want to Be

-If I were a fictional character I would want to be __________, because___________.

This post is the result of the above blog prompt. To be honest, I have a tough time choosing. I can think of at least two specific fictional characters and one general character I would love to be. The worlds they live in are so much more appealing to me than this human world. Let us take a look at them, shall we?

The first character is Valael, from the second book in my Realm Jumper Chronicles, Elf-Witch. She was originally born during the Elves’ time on Earth to a Mixed Blood couple, Solana of the Moon Elves, and Izlal of the Guardians. She became separated from her parents at only two months of age and was raised by Elwyndon and Thosaeryl of the Moon Elves. She stayed on Earth when the Elves returned to their homeworld of Paer-Jhysael and was killed during the invasion of the Roman Empire.

Many millennia later enters Maia, a human carrying the soul of Valael. Through a series of dreams, she discovers she was once Elven, meets Elwyndyn, and is restored to her Elven life. However, she is so much more than Elven. She is also an Elf-Witch and a Guardian. The mixed blood gives her much more powerful magic than just a Moon Elf or Guardian would have.

The second character is Arwen from the Lord of the Rings. I really do not need to tell you about Arwen as most are quite familiar with her. However, once again, we have an Elf. You see, I’ve always had an affinity with Elves. I do not know why. From the moment I read about Elves in the Dragonlance Chronicles and the Shanara series, to the moment I saw them brought to life through Peter Jackson’s vision of the Lord of the Rings, that affinity has grown. Maybe my fantasy tale is not so far-fetched. Maybe there is something to a human having an Elven soul. I do not know; I just know they feel like kin to me.

Finally, there is the Carpathian species found in the Dark series by Christine Feehan. From the moment I picked up the first book I found of hers, Dark Demon, I was hooked. There is something about the Carpathian species that speaks to something deep inside me, much as the Elves do. The ability of the Carpathians to shift forms, connect with nature and use it to create magic, as well as their strong sense of loyalty, speaks to me on a level that is rarely ever found.

It is a toss-up between the three. I would happily live in any of their worlds. Although these worlds are wrought with danger, I would gladly face it in order to finally feel I have come home. I have never felt normal. I have never felt at home. My human life has always felt wrong. Yet it is all I have. I know it sounds strange, but the worlds these characters live in feel normal to me. I can relate to them in a way I have never been able to relate to this world.

I suppose that is why I write fantasy. It is a means of escaping my uncomfortable human life and, for the time I am writing, inhabit a world that is comfortable and familiar. I am with those I can relate to and understand. I am in a world where I am no longer trapped by a society that wants me to conform to a specific ideal and I can be who I truly am.

I know it sounds silly to most, but that is how I truly feel. They say authors are insane. Maybe I am. However, I would rather be insane and feel alive and whole while in my fantasy world, then live the rest of this human life being only part of who I am.
